It’s worth remembering that every sentence in an essay has a purpose.
You probably have a decent idea what the purpose of the introduction is: to establish what will be covered, and perhaps also what will be argued, in the essay.
So, you can tell what the topic of the first body paragraph is by reading the topic sentence, which is the first sentence in the paragraph.
Concluding Sentences A concluding sentence goes at the end of a paragraph or topic, and sums up for the readers what has just been discussed and relates it back to the question.
Here are some examples of topic sentences for the example essay: ‘The most significant cause for the Holocaust is the economic state of Germany.’ ‘Another reason why the Holocaust occurred is due to Hitler’s personal views.’ These sentences let the reader know what the paragraph will discuss (what the next point to be discussed in the essay is) and also relate the paragraph back to the introduction.
This gives the essay a nice flow, and shows that it has been well organised.
The danger is it ends up reading like one of Philomena Cunk’s bold statements, like “Time has existed since before time began”.
Instead of something broad like “Women have been second-class citizens throughout history” – which could only be backed up by a far broader study than possible in an undergraduate essay – it would be better to keep more focused.
At least, not if you’re a novelist, short story writer, journalist, or even a blogger. It’s something we don’t talk about very often because it seems somehow petty.
It’s not something that’s likely to lose you marks.
