BA, MA, MFA and Ph D degrees are awarded through the department, and a full range of courses is offered in six areas: Creative Writing Literature Rhetoric and Writing Studies Screen Studies Teaching English as a Second Language Linguistics The English Department also works with OSU to provide additional services: the OSU Writing Center, the International Teaching Assistant Program, and exciterbulb.Ohio State University Columbus, OH Three-year program (39 credits) Funding: The current stipend for MFAs with teaching appointments (one course each semester) is roughly ,000 for the nine-month academic year (along with the stipend comes a fee authorization, which means you do not have to pay tuition).
We’re called and I’m the Editor-in-Chief and working to build this lit mag with my compatriots as well as with the administration and faculty has been by far the most rewarding part of my MFA experience. We came up with the idea in a bar around March and now it’s August and our website will be up by the end of the month, we’ve secured funding though the Library (hayyyy Gray Family Chair for Innovative Library Services!
) and our department has even given us our very own office space.
Our mentors in the Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing write, teach and publish across genre; engage in interdisciplinary projects; take care of the communities of which they are a part; and, most of all, approach the twenty-first century writing life with invention, pragmatism and creativity. Geronimo Johnson’s debut novel "Hold it ‘Til it Hurts" was a 2013 PEN/Faulkner finalist.
With like-minded faculty to aid them, students at OSU-Cascades are encouraged to cultivate the spontaneity, innovation, courage and commitment the writing life demands. "Welcome to Braggsville," a dark, socially provocative comedic novel about four liberal college kids who attempt to stage a lynching during a Civil War reenactment, was released in the US and UK in early 2015 by William Morrow.
That said, it’s pretty affordable to live in town (cheap housing can be found, farmer’s markets can be shopped at, $2 beers can be acquired, etc.) and I like the community feel of knowing that if you go to one of the four or so popular coffee places, you’re bound to run into someone from the program who you can chat with for an inordinate amount of time instead of actually working (the point of coffee shops? I will say, though, that if you want to leave Corvallis—we’re 90 min from Portland and 3-4 hours from Seattle, traffic depending—then the stipend quickly becomes Just Not Enough.
Living in Corvallis isn’t bad, but my frame of reference for college towns is pretty piss poor because I went to undergrad in rural Maine.Which doesn’t mean I’m fab; it just means that I have never cried before, during, or after teaching a single class. We turn in poems (for two of our three workshops, we can turn in as many poems as we want over the quarter, which is pretty rad; for the third WS, we have set weeks where we turn in) and then we workshop them the next week.Compared to some of the horror stories I’ve heard from other MFAs, I can say that I feel truly lucky to have the support of the faculty and my fellow newbie teachers. We will occasionally read books and present on those, too; I believe we read three books in each of my WSs last year, some contemporaries like Rebecca Lindenberg’s Love, An Index (swoon) and also some wonderful dead white guys like Hopkins. It offers a variety of courses, most of them small lectures and discussion classes. The curriculum supports intensive study in specific areas but allows students to combine them according to their own professional goals.Faculty: Lina Ferreira, Kathy Fagan Grandinetti, Michelle Herman, Marcus Jackson, Lee Martin, Nick White Application (Deadline Dec.9): Admission rate: “In our 2015 admissions season (starting fall 2015), we had 262 applications; 149 in fiction, 42 in nonfiction; and 71 in poetry. Not only does it provide familiarity with the literary works that shape cultural heritage and the structure, history, and use of the language, but it also develops the ability to think analytically, to write effectively, and to consider various points of view.Since its inception in the 1960s, the English Department at Oklahoma State University has attracted and served students with a diversity of interests. The faculty has been uber supportive and I’m going to go ahead and speak for all of us when I say we’re all in a tizzy about the mag. We also have a great reading series and have had the chance to see read and speak with (as a program, so, imagine us in a room with about 15 people usually) writers ranging from Cheryl Strayed to Claire Vaye Watkins to Jenny Bouley to Kazim Ali.And, this year, Rita Dove is coming as part of some fancy OSU award, so that’ll be great, too.
