Janet Zwick, LBSW, Editor-in-Chief Janet was the Deputy Director, Iowa Department of Public Health, Division Director, Division of Behavioral Health and Professional until she retired in 2007.She has more than 35 years experience in leadership roles with a specific focus on substance abuse treatment and prevention within public health settings.Since retirement in 2007 she has continued to provide consultation to states, associations and programs in the area of process improvement, strategic planning, policy and provider development as well as working with programs in making a system change to a Recovery Oriented System of Care. The daily rum ration was well over what is now recommended as the alcohol limit for a week, but together with daily mugs of lime juice was recommended as a cure for scurvy and a way of sterilizing dirty water. People who drink a moderate (actually rather large - up to half a bottle of wine a day) amount of alcohol are healthier than non-drinkers, but above this level alcohol starts to damage health and the consequences can become very serious.Alcohol abuse has a medical rather than a social meaning; it's a pattern of drinking that affects health, relationships or ability to work and it's defined in medical publications like the DSM-IV. The more minor ones are sleep disorders and loss of sex drive; more serious ones include heart disease, cirrhosis of the liver and several varieties of cancer. People who abuse alcohol are more likely to commit antisocial behaviour such as getting into fights. It's not the same as excessive drinking, although many people use the two interchangeably."Excessive" drinking is largely a social idea and social standards change. If employers become aware of problem drinking dismissal is possible, especially in jobs which require precision or involve machinery. There are a number of strategies that can be investigated here.In addition to being widely published, she is also a current member of numerous committees and boards including: the Midwest Counter Drug Training Center, Substance Abuse Research Consortium and Iowa Public Health Association as well as Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to the prevention and treatment field, Janet Zwick has received numerous awards from national and state associations.
